探討的主題問題有：
1. 社會學為何要研究「國家」？和政治學的研究有何不同？又如何研究？
2. 將「國家」作為人類的一種（政治）組織形式，認識「現代國家」在文明發展中的歷史位置與特色。
3. 用不同的主題來建構「國家」社會學的知識鳥瞰圖譜
3-1. 國家的「社會基礎」：在「馬克思─恩格斯」的身影下的經典的搏鬥？有那些重要辯論議題與人物？ （介紹：Marx-Engels, Gramsci, Poulantza versus Miliband etc）
3-2. 韋柏、歷史比較、發展理論與國家研究：八0年代，社會科學為何燃起了對於「國家理論」的興趣？他們的主要問題意識是什麼？有那些重要人物與課題？（介紹：Evans, Skocpol, Mann etc.）
3-3 威權解體與「政治轉型」：1980年後期以降的重要議題？
（威權轉型與民主化議題，介紹O’Donnell and Schimitter, 及台灣的相關研究）
3-4 掃瞄「前沿」的相關研究 （國家人類學？國家的文化批判研究？中國大陸的特殊議題？）

課程目標 |
1. 透過對於「現代國家」的緣起以及相關理論，建立有關政治社會學的基本認識。
2. 認識古典論述範疇，近代議題，相關台灣研究，進而建立基本問題意識與知識範疇。
3. 提示學生如何加強理論與現實分析結合的能力。
4. 提示學生如何可進一步研究權力、意識與文化，瞭解相關理論的規範性意涵。

課程要求 |
一、本學期依討論主題，有兩次攜回作業（take-home）。學生有一星期時間完成攜回作業。作業題目部分由老師決定，部分由同學自行決定。內容以與閱讀、延伸閱讀、上課、實作心得筆記、反思與綜合整理有關為要。字數以約3000字或四頁為宜，須依照學術格式，按時繳交，繳交時視情形進行口頭報告。
二、考評及成績核算方式如下：
1.二次作業25％, 35％ ＝60％
2.至少一次課堂口頭報告＝20％。（引言人不是評論人，其功能在報告並引發討論，須平均以下兩種角色：1. 如實摘要報告，2. 整理詮釋內容的主要議題。
3.根據日常的參與與課堂準備情形＝20％ 在討論引言、口頭報告之外，其他的課堂參與，包括事先閱讀與參與討論。
